Process Behaviour Charts
BaseLine© is a simple tool for creating, using and sharing process behaviour charts. It has been created specifically for the non-e
xpert user and was officially launched on 1st Jan 2010.
The purpose of BaseLine© is to help make the power of Improvement Science accessible to everyone.
A process behaviour chart is just a time-ordered series of measurements of a process presented in a way that the “story” in the data can be appreciated at-a-glance.
The purpose of a process behaviour chart is to invite questions such as ”What happened then to cause the change in the behaviour of the process that we can see on the chart?”
Finding the answers to these questions leads to new insights, and actions that lead to improvement. It doesn’t matter if the change was for better or worse – both offer an opportunity to learn and improve.
Seeing the change and then investigating the cause is the key to improvement.

4N Charts
This is a simple technique that is proving very effective in engaging people in the process of improvement. The 4N Chart was born in an “Eureka” moment on a sunny Sunday morning in the summer of 2006 while Simon was walking his dog in the park.
A 4N chart has two dimensions:
- the horizontal direction is Time
- the vertical direction is Outcome
This gives four combinations – things that are …
- Not-OK Now which are the Niggles
- OK Now which are the Nuggets
- OK in the Future which are the NiceIfs
- Not-OK in the Future which are the NoNos
A 4N Chart is a quick and effective way to structure feedback for individuals and groups and can be employed at any level.
